After President Lai Calls for Party Cooperation, Prosecutors Escort Terminally Ill KMT Staffer from Taipei to Pingtung

As the Pingtung District Prosecutors Office investigates allegations of fraudulent signatures—specifically, deceased individuals—on the petition to recall DPP legislator Wu Li-Hua of the mountain Indigenous constituency, the lead petitioner Chang Fang-Shuo has been detained. It is now reported that a KMT Indigenous Affairs Committee specialist surnamed Lee was also summoned for questioning today. Lee is reportedly in the terminal stage of cancer and was taken into custody after undergoing chemotherapy in Taipei. The KMT criticized the move, questioning, “Are the prosecutors completely inhumane?”
On the 15th, prosecutors had summoned 11 members of the KMT’s Pingtung County chapter for questioning. Chang Fang-Shuo has been formally detained and denied visitation rights, while two other suspects were released on bail of NT$100,000 each. The remaining eight individuals were allowed to leave.
According to reports, Lee served as the liaison for the Indigenous recall case and was summoned by prosecutors today. However, he is in the final stage of lung cancer and has been on medical leave for some time. After receiving chemotherapy at National Taiwan University Hospital this afternoon, prosecutors still insisted that he travel to Pingtung for further questioning. Although his lawyer intended to request a remote video interrogation, the prosecutors refused, saying they would only allow it if a doctor officially certified that Lee was unable to travel long distances.
KMT spokesperson Yang Chih-Yu condemned the prosecutors’ actions as “inhumane,” saying the issue isn’t just about long-distance travel—regardless of whether detention is ordered after questioning, the individual requires constant accompaniment due to his health. “He’s being hunted by the justice system simply because he was responsible for an Indigenous recall case.” Yang added that this stands in stark contrast to President Lai Ching-Te’s inauguration speech earlier that same morning, in which he called for cross-party dialogue and enhanced political cooperation—a deeply ironic contradiction.

“The Pingtung District Prosecutors Office recently conducted a search at the Pingtung County Party Headquarters.”
